THE ROLE OF A MATERNITY NURSE

Firstly what is a maternity Nurse?

 

The term nursing originates from nursing a baby as appose to a medically trained nurse. A maternity nurse is a care professional in all aspects of baby care. There are other terms used that are basically the same: 

  • Confinement nurse 

  • Newborn care specialist (NCS) 

  • Postnatal carer 

 

As maternity nursing is an unregulated industry, please do check maternity nurses credentials (DBS, insurance, qualifications, references etc)

Duties of a Maternity Nurse

A maternity nurse helps new mothers in all aspects of caring for their newborn babies, some of those duties can include:

  • Maternity nurses can provide a routine to ensure that your baby is effectively feeding and sleeping​

  • Provide information and guidance with infant feeding (whether breast, formula or mixed feeding)​

  • Practical help with care of your baby (feeding, winding, nappy changing, bathing, dressing/ undressing, settling to sleep​

  • Accompanying mums to appointments (hospital, GP, baby activities etc.)​

  • Responsible for nursery duties (baby's laundry, sterilising bottles and equipment, keeping nursery clean and tidy)​

  • Helping to involve siblings with your new baby​

  • Listening and encouragement for both parents with respect to the care of their new baby

Maternity nurses can offer live in 24 hours up to 6 days per week. Providing maternity nurse service to mums, families and their babies, working nationwide and overseas. In addition, 24/2, 24/3 and 24/4 maternity nurse service are available, to support parents at weekends or midweek. Daily and night maternity nurses can work up to 12 hours per day. Contracts are usually 1 to 16 weeks, but can be tailored to suit your individual requirements.
